Osasuna and Alaves play to a 2-2 draw

An nonexistent penalty in stoppage time keeps Osasuna from taking the three points

Club Atlético Osasuna (10-8-12, 38 points) and Deportivo Alavés (8-8-14, 32 points) played to a 2-2 draw at Mendizorroza Stadium on Sunday night. Osasuna took an early lead through defender Valentin Rosier, but Alavés forward Toni Martínez equalized late in the first half. In the closing minutes, Osasuna’s Ante Budimir converted a penalty to put the visitors ahead, but Lucas Boyé leveled with a 12-yard shot in stoppage time.

Osasuna couldn’t have had a better start to the match as the team took the lead four minutes in, when Rosier finished a cross from midfielder Kike Barja. The visitors controlled the early stages, but Alavés grew into the match and forced goalkeeper Sergio Herrera into action. Just before halftime, Martínez broke through the Osasuna back line and leveled with a right-footed shot.

After halftime, the match remained balanced until Osasuna coach Alessio Lisci brought on forward Víctor Muñoz, who helped create more chances. Muñoz was fouled in the area, and Budimir converted the penalty to put Osasuna ahead. Alavés pushed for another equalizer, and in stoppage time, VAR called the referee to review a foul by  defender Alejandro Catena on Martínez. The penalty was awarded incorrectly even though, it was called after play that had already finished with the ball going out of bounds. Boyé converted from the spot to secure the draw.

Osasuna next hosts Real Betis at El Sadar on Sunday, April 12. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. local (1 p.m. BST, 8 a.m. ET).
